Kale Smoothie with Fruit Recipe

Most parents can relate to wanting to sneak in some extra veggies to their toddler's diet and this fruit kale smoothie does just that! This delicious smoothie is loaded with fruits and veggies and is also 100% kid friendly.

Getting an extra boost of fruits and vegetables into your diets is great way to boost that immune system and overall just generally be more healthy.

I'd always heard of people putting kale or spinach into smoothies and my first thought may have been the same as yours - yuck! I couldn't imagine how you could possible drink a green smoothie that would actually taste good.

However, it turns out that even a tiny bit of leafy greens will turn a smoothie green and the fruit actually completely masks the taste of kale.

I love being able to share healthy smoothie recipes that can also serve as a base for you to customize to your taste preferences! I've used this same base for a few different variations, but this one is definitely one of our top choices.

Why You'll Love this Recipe

This kale fruit smoothie has been one of our go to smoothies lately. I love it for a handful of reasons:

  • This healthy green smoothie is super quick to make, which is really helpful when I've got hungry kiddos. Quick and healthy recipes are a great thing!
  • It's packed with fruits and vegetables so I can feel good about what I'm eating and whta I'm serving to my family. There's loads of Vitamin C in it, as well as other vital nutrients.
  • This recipe is dairy free and sugar free, so it's perfect for those with dietary restrictions or health goals.

Ingredients

You can use this kale pineapple smoothie recipe as a base idea of what to put in any healthy green smoothie. Vary the leafy green you put in it, the type of fruit, or even whether or not there is yogurt in it:

  • kale
  • frozen fruit
  • unsweetened applesauce
  • water

Substitutions and Variations

I typically use a mango strawberry and pineapple blend for this pineapple kale smoothie recipe. However, making a kale berry smoothie would be super tasty. You could use frozen berries! You can really use any type of fruit that you want.

Feel free to sub milk for the water. You can keep it dairy free by using coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk or another dairy free substitute. Swapping the kale for spinach would also be a good substitute!

For extra protein, add some collagen or a scoop of your favorite protein powder into the blender.

If you'd like to add extra sweetness, then use sweetened apple sauce. A drizzle of honey, maple syrup or agave syrup would also be tasty! Even a few medjool dates would sweeten up the creamy smoothie.

There are dozens of other delicious add-ins you can mix into this healthy breakfast smoothie. A few of my favorites are:

  • chia seeds
  • peanut butter
  • almond butter
  • hemp seeds
  • fresh ginger
  • Greek yogurt
  • dairy free yogurt
  • granola

How to Store Leftover Smoothie

There are so many ways to easily store leftovers from a smoothie recipe. Depending on when you want to drink your leftover smoothie, there are a few great options on how to store it.

I have a whole post about how to store leftover smoothie, but here's a quick summary:

frozen smoothie in an ice tray
  • Freezer: You can pour your smoothie into ice cube trays or popsicle molds and freeze it. Then let it thaw, or add it to a blender with milk and drink up! Alternatively, you can do the same by freezing your smoothie in zip top bags and laying them flat in the freezer.
  • Fridge: Store leftover smoothie in mason jars, or another airtight container, and give it a good shake when you're ready to drink it.
  • Freeze ingredients: If you're a fan of a fresh smoothie, you can still make things easier on yourself by freezing the ingredients for your smoothies. Measure out the ingredients for your smoothie, place them in zip-top bags or ice cube trays, and they're ready to pop in the blender as needed!

What to Serve with Kale Smoothie with Fruit

My favorite is to add in a delicious muffin to go with it! Some of our favorite toddler muffins are:

A tasty egg bite or some delicious over medium eggs would also be a good way to get some extra protein along with your green smoothie! Or keep things "on-the-go" friendly with a carne asada breakfast burrito.

Tips for Success

Check out these few simple tips to make the perfect smoothie:

  • Don't overfill your blender or it could become difficult to mix your smoothie. It also could cause it to overflow which would be a mess to clean up!
  • If you add powders, you may need to use a silicone spatula to scrape the sides of blender and mix it all in.
  • Always make sure that you are using a clean blender so that the flavor of your smoothie and efficiency of you blender are not effected. If you need some guidance on how to best clean your blender, then check out my post that is the one stop shop for the best tips!

FAQ

Should you use frozen or fresh fruits for smoothies?

Either will work! If you're using fresh fruit, then you may need to add ice to help the smoothie be the right consistency. You can also use a combination of both if you want.

How do you make this vegan fruit smoothie thicker?

Thick smoothies always start with frozen fruit which keeps water content down. If you find your smoothie still isn't as thick and creamy as you'd like, then the best way you can thicken smoothies is to add frozen fruit, ice, banana, or yogurt. Read all about the best tips in my how to make a smoothie thicker or thinner post.

How do you make a smoothie thinner?

If your smoothie gets too thick, you can easily thin it out by adding more liquid. Water and milk are both great options. Orange juice or another fruit juice would work too!

  7. Using applesauce is so smart! I've got to try that. I started making green smoothies this year too and it's amazing how well you can mask the taste. I like throwing in a banana and some frozen berries with some milk/yogurt, chia seeds, and a wad of spinach. A dollop of peanut butter if I'm feeling crazy 😉 The banana taste is so strong you wouldn't even know you're drinking a serving of spinach!
