Variations and Substitutions

This smoothie is so easy to make your own! You can switch things up in so many ways.

Dairy-free or vegan: Use your favorite non-dairy milk and vegan yogurt to make this smoothie.

Berry cherry smoothie: Replace some of the cherries with frozen strawberries, blueberries, blackberries - or all of the above!

Fresh smoothie: No frozen fruit? No problem. Use fresh (but pitted!) cherries instead of frozen. You can also use fresh pineapple or fresh banana. However, the frozen fruit helps to make the smoothie thicker and colder, so you will want to add 1 cup ice into the mix.

Place the frozen cherries, pineapple and banana into the blender. (There's no need to thaw the fruit beforehand! Blending it frozen will create a thick, creamy texture.)

Add the Greek yogurt and pour in the milk, ensuring the liquid surrounds the fruit to help with blending. The yogurt adds creaminess and a slight tang that balances the sweetness of the fruit, but you can make smoothies without yogurt if you prefer.

Blend on high speed until the mixture becomes completely smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick to blend easily, you can add a small splash of milk or water at a time, blending in between, until you reach your preferred consistency. Then divide between two glasses!

Tips for Success

Make the best cherry smoothie ever!

  • Fresh fruit is great in smoothies too - just be sure to add ice.
  • This recipe makes enough for two smoothies or one big smoothie. If you'd rather save your smoothie for later, you can store leftovers in the fridge or freeze it back up for another day.
  • Be kind to your blender! Smoothies can be rough on them! (And they can hold on to odors from last week's garlicky dinner - ew!) Be sure to clean your blender properly each time you use it.

What to Serve With Cherry Smoothies

Enjoy Cherry Smoothies as a breakfast or a snack. To start the day, enjoy them with a slice of breakfast casserole for extra protein. If you have extra cherries, throw them in these mixed berry muffins or throw them in cherry pie for dessert later!

They're a great snack alongside some fresh fruit or something salty and savory like a veggie tray.

FAQ

Do I need to thaw the frozen cherries before blending?

No, you don't need to thaw them! Blending frozen cherries makes the smoothie thick and cold, so you can skip the ice.

Can I use fresh cherries instead of frozen?

Yes, but for the best texture, you may want to add a handful of ice to keep the smoothie cold and thick.

How do I make my smoothie thicker or thinner?

For a thicker smoothie, use less liquid, add extra frozen fruit, or blend in ingredients like Greek yogurt, avocado, or chia seeds for a creamier consistency. If it's not thin enough, you can add more milk or water into the mix.
