Tequila Soda Recipe

This recipe is a favorite of mine! One day, I had the idea in mind for a patriotic, berry spritzer. I tried and tried to make a wine spritzer, but after trying three different types of wine with a variety of mix-ins, I gave up and decided to give tequila a go.

Since tequila is always my liquor of choice, I had it on hand and just went for it. The result was so tasty and refreshing! It was exactly what I had envisioned this bubbly soda to be. And so was born the best tequila soda you'll ever taste! It's reminiscent of ranch water, or other tequila cocktails, but just different enough to make it extra special.

I made a quick mixed berry simple syrup to go in this to really bring out the fruit flavors of summertime and make it extra refreshing on a hot summer day. If you've never made a simple syrup before it's so easy. You just combine water, sugar, and your mix-ins. Heat on medium until the sugar is dissolved and fruit cooks down, allow to cool and then strain! It's such an easy way to sweeten and flavor a cocktail!

Happy hour is going to be so much fun once you try out this recipe. It's great to drink as you kick back on the front porch on a warm evening, or even if you need something fun to pair with homemade hamburgers for your 4th of July party or Labor Day weekend. A delicious little cocktail!

Ingredients

This tequila soda cocktail only requires a few simple ingredients. For the best flavor, make a homemade simple syrup. Then you can combine it with all of the other refreshing cocktail ingredients:

Mixed Berry Simple Syrup

  • water
  • sugar
  • mixed berries

Mixed Berry Spritzer

  • berry simple syrup, made with three kinds of berries
  • lime juice
  • tequila
  • lemon lime soda
  • fresh mixed berries, for garnish

Substitutions and Variations

Feel free to use a store-bought syrup or some other flavor of syrup that you already have on hand! You could use something citrusy, or simply choose strawberry or blueberry instead of mixed berry.

While this recipe calls for tequila, you can use a different type of spirit if you prefer. Make vodka soda or even use some rum. You can also make this non alcoholic with a non-alcoholic spirit or leaving out the liquor altogether.

Shake things up with a different flavor of soda! Grapefruit soda, mango soda, and strawberry soda would be yummy. You can also use flavored club soda or sparkling water.

How to Make a Tequila Soda

This perfect summer cocktail is a two step process. Make the simple syrup first and then you can make the soda. Here's a step-by-step guide on what you'll need to do to make this classic cocktail:

How to Make Mixed Berry Simple Syrup

In a medium saucepan, combine ingredients for the syrup. Cook the fruit mixture over medium heat until sugar is dissolved and the berries have cooked down. This will take about 5 minutes or so.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature

Then strain the simple syrup through a fine mesh strainer to remove the berries and make a smooth syrup. Pour the mixture into an airtight bottle and allow to cool if it is still warm.

How to Make Mixed Berry Tequila Soda

In a cocktail shaker, combine together mixed berry simple syrup, tequila, lemon lime soda and lime. Shake lightly — the soda will bubble over if you shake too vigorously.

Pour tequila cocktail over a glass of ice, using your favorite cocktail glass or stemless wine glass.

Top with a handful of mixed berries and a lime wedge and enjoy!

What to Serve with Tequila Soda

This bright and bubbly drinks pairs wonderfully with all of your summer favorites like bruschetta pizza, grilled chicken salad, and grilled shrimp. We even love to serve it on taco night with a big side of homemade guacamole and tortilla chips.

But it's also a great party cocktail to serve with delicious appetizers like dry rub wings and tomato bruschetta.

Tips for Success

Delicious recipes, like this one, are one of the reasons I love summer so much! It's so easy to throw this cocktail together and it always turns out tasty. Here's a few simple tips to ensure your tequila soda is always full of bubbly goodness:

  • A great tequila makes all the difference with this drink. Patrón silver and Don Julio blanco tequila are great go-to options. However, you can use different types of tequila as well! But remember to make sure that it is chilled before making this soda for the best results.
  • Always squeeze your own fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice will work in a pinch, but fresh is so much better.
  • Do not make your cocktail until just before serving. You'll want the bubbles of the soda to stay crisp and wouldn't want the ice to water down the drink.
  • Taste test your cocktail before serving. Depending on the sweetness of the berries you used you may need extra lime or more of a sweet mixer in your cocktail. And make sure you're making this fresh drink in small batches for the best results.
