Onion Dip Recipe
I love how much flavor you can build from such a short ingredient list. This homemade onion dip is creamy and savory with little pieces of onion throughout. Worcestershire sauce gives it an extra layer of flavor that makes this simple dip more interesting.
I especially like this one for parties because I can make it ahead and keep it in the fridge until the party starts.
Why You'll Love this Recipe
One thing I think you will appreciate about this recipe is how budget-friendly it is. A container of sour cream and a handful of everyday seasonings make a generous bowl for sharing.
There's also nothing to chop, which means no onion or garlic to prep and no cutting board to clean afterward. And when I'm bringing snacks somewhere, this dip is easy to take along. I can keep it covered in the fridge until it's time to go and bring chips or veggies for dipping.
Ingredients

Sour cream gives the dip its creamy base. Plain, full-fat Greek yogurt works too if you prefer a slightly tangier flavor.
Dried onion flakes provide the main onion flavor in the dip.
Onion powder and garlic powder add extra savory flavor. If you're out of one, you can slightly increase the other, but the flavor will be a little different.
Celery seed, paprika and dried parsley round out the seasoning and add a little color. If you're missing the parsley, you can leave it out.
Kosher salt and black pepper enhance the other flavors. If you're using table salt instead of kosher salt, start with less and adjust to taste.
Worcestershire sauce adds savory depth. Soy sauce or even coconut aminos can work in a pinch, but start with a smaller amount since those ingredients can be saltier.
Recipe Variation
Make it French onion dip. Replace the seasonings with half a packet of dry French onion soup mix and stir in ¼ cup caramelized onions.

- Start with the sour cream. Spoon it into a mixing bowl and spread it out a little. This makes it easier to work the seasonings through the thick sour cream.
- Add the seasonings. Dried onion flakes are key here because they add little pieces of onion that onion powder can't.

- Mix the dip. Stir until you don't see any pockets of seasoning, scraping along the bottom and sides of the bowl as you go.
- Give it time to chill. Cover the bowl and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes. This gives the dried onion time to soften and flavor the sour cream.
Madison's Tips for Success:
I've tested this recipe and have successfully made it many times. Use these tips to ensure that it turns out perfectly for you, too!
- Give it a good stir before serving. The dip can thicken a little as it chills, so stir it again before putting it on the table.
- Sour cream is a perishable dairy product, so don't let the onion dip sit out of the fridge for more than 3 hours. If you're serving it outside in the sun, it's best to place the bowl over a larger bowl filled with ice.

Storing and Freezing
Store leftover onion dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
I don't recommend freezing this dip because sour cream can separate once it's frozen and thawed, changing the creamy texture.
Homemade Onion Dip FAQs
Yes! This recipe is easy to double when you're serving a larger group. Mix everything together in a larger bowl, then divide the dip between smaller serving bowls if you want to place it in different spots around the table.
I recommend sticking with dried onion flakes for this recipe. Fresh onion has a stronger flavor and crunch, so it won't give the dip quite the same texture.
Sour cream brands can vary in consistency, and the dried onion will absorb some moisture as the dip sits. If your dip is thicker than you'd like after chilling, stir in a small spoonful of milk until it reaches the consistency you want.
Serving Ideas
Serve this easy dip with potato chips, crackers, pretzels or fresh veggies like carrots, celery and bell peppers. For a bigger appetizer spread, add an easy vegetable tray or easy guacamole with tortilla chips.
