Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

Fall is peeking its head around the corner and that means one thing and one thing only: Pumpkin Spice Latte madness.

If you're already loading up your Starbucks gift cards in preparation, you might want to try this homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe before heading out the door. You may just realize how incredibly easy it is to make a delicious PSL at home.

Don't tell Starbucks, but I think I've found my new favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte. Because Arizona doesn't believe in fall starting anywhere close to the crazy PSL season, I've discovered that this recipe can easily be made into a hot or cold version. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be switching over to a hot version, but for now, an iced version will do just fine.

The espresso roast flavor combined with delicious homemade Pumpkin Spice Creamer (which really tastes like pumpkin!) just makes this my number one go to drink for the fall. The best part about this drink? It can serve as your morning coffee drink because it's super easy to make.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

This seasonal cuppa is probably my new favorite right now, and I bet it'll be yours too.

  • You can adjust the sweetness, spice level and creaminess to perfectly match your taste, making every sip just right for you.
  • Control the quality of what goes into your latte, using natural ingredients like real pumpkin, maple syrup, and homemade creamer without unnecessary additives.
  • Save money by skipping the coffee shop and enjoy your favorite seasonal drink at home, whenever you want!

Ingredients

At the heart of this recipe is my homemade pumpkin spice creamer. Using homemade creamers are great for making your own "lattes" at home because they are already perfectly sweetened, especially this time of year! If you've having guests over for the holidays, it's perfect to keep it on hand for your guests. That said, feel free to use a store-bought creamer if you like.

Here's what else you will need:

  • Espresso or brewed coffee
  • Pumpkin creamer: Feel free to swap in a non-dairy version if you like.
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Maple syrup
  • Pumpkin spice whipped cream

Best Coffee for a PSL

The key to any good coffee drink recipe is to start with great coffee. With these types of drinks, I like to start with a dark roast or preferably an espresso roast.

Since a store-bought Pumpkin Spice Latte typically has real espresso in it, using espresso roast will allow you to just have coffee but with a bolder, most robust flavor. This usually works best because of the liquid creamer that is already sweetened.

Instructions

Brew your espresso and pour it into a large, heat-safe mug. If you're using brewed coffee instead, prepare it according to your preferred method and pour it into the mug.

Warm your pumpkin creamer on the stovetop or in the microwave until it’s gently heated through. Slowly pour the warm creamer over your coffee or espresso, stirring gently to blend the flavors together.

If desired, add more maple syrup and a dash of pumpkin pie spice to enhance the sweetness and spice to your liking. Stir to incorporate.

Top your latte with a generous swirl of pumpkin spice whipped cream, creating a fluffy, indulgent layer.

For the final touch, sprinkle a pinch of pumpkin pie spice over the whipped cream as a festive garnish. Enjoy your homemade pumpkin spice latte!

Tips & tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for making this recipe:

  • Taste as you go when adding maple syrup and pumpkin pie spice, so you can customize the latte to your preferred level of sweetness and spice.
  • Heat your pumpkin creamer gently to avoid curdling. This will give you a smooth, creamy texture that blends well with the coffee.
  • Iced pumpkin spice latte: Let your brewed coffee cool, then pour it over ice. Add the pumpkin creamer, stir, and finish with whipped cream for a chilled twist on the classic.

FAQ

Can I use non-dairy creamer for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute the pumpkin creamer with a non-dairy alternative like almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. Many brands also offer pumpkin spice-flavored non-dairy creamers.

How can I make this latte healthier?

You can reduce the amount of maple syrup for less sweetness, use a sugar-free or low-calorie creamer and opt for a homemade whipped cream made with lighter ingredients.

Can I use store-bought pumpkin spice syrup instead of homemade creamer?

Absolutely! If you're short on time, a store-bought pumpkin spice syrup can be a convenient substitute for the homemade pumpkin creamer, allowing you to quickly mix it into your coffee along with your go-to milk or half-and-half.
