I remember when I came back from studying abroad in Italy and people asked me how it was. Well, it was amazing, of course. It’s impossible to sum up four months of my life into a short response and I always found that it helped to talk about specific moments. Now I ask people who may have come back from a time abroad or away pointed questions about their experiences because I know how difficult it is to sum up an experience.
But with college starting up across the country, I wanted to talk about why I think you should study abroad, if you’re in college. From the time I started college, I knew I wanted to study abroad. Once I was dating Steven and later we were engaged, it was hard to make the choice?to do long distance for four months. But I knew it was something I wanted to do and I’m so glad I chose to.
Everyone always says once you get to Europe, travel is cheap. This is relatively?true, mostly in comparison to the cost of getting over to Europe. Most students studying abroad will want to do some travel, so finding travel buddies is really easy. A lot of the time schools will have trips that are available for students.
Here are a few tips for maximizing travel opportunities:
-Find travel organizations with trips
-Find a travel buddy
-Take advantage of free or low cost trips through the school
-Utilize breaks and weekends
Learn New Things?
One of the best parts about studying abroad for me was actually the classes! I was able to take a dark room photography class, drawing, and graphic design class while I was in Florence. Getting to take graphic design was exciting for me since I had had the same teacher for my design classes and I wanted to learn from someone else, too. Taking drawing and photography were just amazing. I loved getting to learn about dark room photography and learning to (kind of, sort of) draw.
