Springtime is the perfect time to get outside and do landscaping and little updates to your home exterior like installing new light fixtures to make your entire home look refreshed! Here are five easy ways to update your home’s curb appeal this spring.
A few weeks before we finished up our home renovation, I pulled up to the house one day to meet with the contractor and I almost couldn’t look at our front yard. We had done SO much work to the interior of the home and even some work on the exterior, but our front yard had been completely forgotten. I knew it was time to start focusing our energy on updating our curb appeal or it would feel so silly to have a beautifully renovated home on the inside with a front yard I couldn’t stand to look at.
When springtime rolls around, everyone gets that itch for spring cleaning and home updates. It makes perfect sense to take care of those updates before the weather gets too hot! I partnered with Lamps Plus today to give you easy tips for updating your curb appeal this spring.
In order to fully appreciate the way the outside of our home looks now, you really have to see where it started. In case you are just tuning into our renovation story, the house we now live in was originally built by my great grand parents and both of them lived in it their entire adult lives. Unfortunately, they didn’t do a ton of modernizing or keeping up with trends, so the landscaping, curb appeal, etc., was all original straight from 1959.
The first step for us to be able to update the curb appeal for our house was to clean up! We got rid of unwanted plants, trash, rocks, tree stumps, etc., throughout the front yard to have a clean slate!
Power Wash and/or Repaint Exterior
I never realized how much of a difference power washing the exterior of your house can make until our contractors sprayed our house down before repainting it. I remember having to ask if they had already painted the house, because of how new and clean it looked! If you are not looking to repaint the exterior of your home this spring, you should definitely at least power wash the exterior and any fences to give the entire outside of the home new life!
Along with repainting the exterior, we also added hardiplank siding to the front of the house to really give the home a unique and custom look.
Update Light Fixtures
Lighting fixtures make a HUGE difference in what your home looks like. If your home’s exterior light fixtures haven’t been updated recently (in the last 5-10 years), it’s time to switch those out. The exterior light fixtures on a house say so much about the?personality of the home and can make a huge difference in helping your home to stand out in the neighborhood, in a good way of course. When I was browsing for light fixtures, I came across so many that I loved from Lamps Plus. We have a lot of open glass, vintage light bulb style light fixtures throughout the house, so when I saw these from Lamps Plus, I fell in love. I loved the metal mixed with open glass for the lights because it’s really unique for an exterior light.
Updating the light fixtures on the outside of your home is a small investment that makes a huge impact in your curb appeal!
Whether you want to hire someone else to do it or you’re going to do it yourself, landscaping makes a huge difference in curb appeal. As the weather begins to warm up, weeds start growing which means lawn maintenance is a must. Be sure to prune bushes, cut back tree branches, and replant annual flowers and plants. If you’re installing grass (not from seed) this is a great time to do that as well! Landscaping ended up being a big project for us because we had so much space and so much to change, but it’s one of the things that has made the most impact in our yard.
This is the part that I love! If you live in a newer subdivision or an area where houses are being renovated frequently, it may start to feel like all of the homes look the same. Add your own unique touch to your curb appeal to really allow it to stand out. Whether it’s a flag, patio furniture, lawn gnome or unique address plaque or mailbox, let your family’s style and personality show a little in the curb appeal. For us, it was all about having a modern color palette for the paint, the open glass outdoor lights from Lamps Plus, and the unique address plaque that we made for our house numbers. Those little touches all make the home so unique to us and definitely help to make sure that our house doesn’t just blend in in the neighborhood.
Now it’s time to go out and make your yards and homes refreshed for spring!
