The first pregnancy comes with a lot of unexpected things. There’s really no way to know how your body will react to changing hormones or a stretching belly. Even though they say every pregnancy is different, there are quite a few things I have learned through this pregnancy that hopefully will be helpful starting points for the next!
One thing I have definitely learned a lot about is which items are my definite must haves to help make it through any pregnancy, but especially the first! The biggest unknown was how my body would handle food in general, with potential morning sickness and/or increased hunger. Luckily, I’ve had huge cravings for fresh fruit and have discovered an obsession for Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars and Outshine Fruit Bars.
Food plays an incredibly big part in a pregnancy. As you continue further into the pregnancy, your calorie needs increase and it’s especially important to pay attention to what you’re eating. As I’ve said before, fruit is a huge craving of mine and I am constantly wanting it for a snack. Finding the Outshine Bars have been a huge help in that because these fruity treats are perfect for cooling down, fulfilling my fruit craving and even a craving for something sweet.
The best part about these bars is they’re quick to eat but there is also a huge variety in flavors. There are four different Outshine Bars:?Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars,?Outshine Fruit Bars,?Outshine Coconut Water Bars, and?Outshine Fruit and Veggie Bars. This provides a ton of variety for having different snacks every day or as often as you need a little pick me up!
Some women are able to get away without many maternity clothes. For me, this wasn’t really an option. After the first trimester, I no longer had any shorts that felt comfortable to wear and desperately needed a few new pairs to get me by. A pregnancy wardrobe is a small step in the direction of a capsule wardrobe, because to me it’s all about essential pieces.
Especially having moved to a new climate right in the middle of my pregnancy, I knew I would need to be very specific in what kind of maternity clothes I needed. I bought four pairs of shorts (jean, white, black and gray) and two pairs of capris. I’ve actually been surprised that I wear the capris fairly often, especially at night to dress up a little more or when we have a cooler day. I opted for a full panel because it was most comfortable for me. On top of that I bought a handful of shirts that were preggo friendly, but none actually have the side ruching that is typical with maternity clothes, which means I’ll be able to wear all of the clothes even after pregnancy.
I have also been wearing tons of dresses! Especially with the heat, it’s so nice wearing a dress and feeling comfortable but also dressy. At the beginning of the pregnancy, I only wanted to wear dresses because they were the only thing that made my little bump show. For some reason, any two piece outfits (jeans, skirts, etc) made my bump disappear! So dresses have definitely been a must have for me in my pregnancy wardrobe.

Since we’ve been completely uprooted during this pregnancy, I would say my pregnancy must haves have been very minimalist in nature. I haven’t been able to really put a lot of time or thought into things I might need and instead, I’ve only purchased things I genuinely have a need for. After having to deal with packing an entire house (and then again helping my parents) I’m totally glad I haven’t accumulated a lot of stuff during this pregnancy.
My two absolute must haves outside of fashion and food are a Pregnancy Wedgefor after the 20 week mark when you can’t sleep on your back and a homemade stretch mark cream. My best friend made me this one and it has been amazing. It smells so good (which is a common complaint against store bought lotions). The best part is even with applying it every day, I still have only used a small mason jar’s worth, which has been great for all of our traveling and relocating!
